Adoption-101

When we first signed up to be foster parents we were told that 75% of the children entering the foster system did not go home. We hoped in the beginning that we would be attached to the children and they would be adopted by us. We had 4 children in our home in the first 8-10years we were foster parents, and all of them were reunified with their parents. We thought with the statistics we were given that we would have been adopting at least one of the kids we had in our home. I am not disappointed that the parents of the children complied with the States requirements and the children were returned, we had just hoped that we would be adoptive parents.

Both children we have adopted have special needs issues. They have both been tested and it has been determined that they are both lower functioning individuals. The bottom line is that they are above the threshold of intelligence to live a somewhat productive life. But not low enough to receive special services that would really help them. As a Christian I believe that God has placed them in my home so that we may minister to them and at the same time, we may be equipped to teach others that we come in contact with who have adopted children and are in the same boat.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that adopting a child
from the local foster system is a crap shoot. I love the children we
have adopted, however, the local foster system does not really share
with you up front all the issues relating to the prospective child you
have in your home. Either they do not know what issue the child has or
may have because they are uneducated or they are doing their best to not
transmit that information to the prospective adoptive parents.
